Describe a family member.
My great-grandmother, Mammie Thomas, was the most loving person I ever knew.
For a season of my childhood, she raised me, and I went everywhere she went. Church on Sundays, shopping trips during the week, and our regular stop at White Castle—her favorite, and mine too, back when it still felt special in the 90s. Being with her felt safe. Familiar. Like belonging without having to earn it.
She was deeply family-oriented and rooted in her faith, a godly woman who loved fully and without condition. She worked for New York Life selling insurance and earned awards for her work, though she carried her success quietly( I didn’t know till she passed). Strength and humility lived side by side in her.
She raised generations—me, my mother, my grandfather—each of us shaped by her care. Her love threaded our family together, quiet and constant.
I miss her more than words can hold, yet she never feels far. I honor her as my ancestor. Offering water and food, setting intention, thanking her for her spiritual support and protection. In those moments, her presence feels close. Some people leave a love so strong it becomes guidance. My great grandmother is that for me.
Love and light
