Writing Prompts

What were your parents doing at your age?

At 30, my parents were deep in the heart of raising a family. They were married with three kids – me and my two sisters – and by then, our home had become the hub for family gatherings. I remember a lot of the events, birthdays, and celebrations taking place at our house. It was like a natural meeting point for our extended family. My aunts, uncles, and cousins would drop by often, sometimes just for those weekly visits that turned into an impromptu family reunion.

We lived in an area that was a bit of a tourist attraction, so life had its rhythm – busy during the summers and quieter during the off-season. My parents were hard workers, especially during those peak times. But even with their busy schedules, they always found time to make space for us. I remember our family beach days on the weekends, where we’d spend hours by the water, and once every summer we’d make a whole day of it with the whole family. Then there were the BBQs in our backyard, with my dad at the grill and my mom setting up everything like a mini celebration. And I can’t forget the nights they’d come home late from partying with friends, laughing as they whipped up a feast in the kitchen, filling the house with the smell of good food and fun.

Looking back, I can see how they juggled so much at once – raising a family, managing the house, and staying connected with everyone around us. It’s a time in their lives that seems both hectic and full of love, and at 30 now with my own kids, I’m gaining a new appreciation for all they handled with such grace.
